One of the greatest scorers in NBA history, Carmelo Anthony, made his retirement from the league official on Monday.

He spent 19 NBA seasons, mostly with the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks, and was named to 10 All-Star teams, six All-NBA first teams, and the Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medal teams. Anthony is eighth all-time in points scored and was selected to the NBA’s 75th anniversary squad.

During his first year at Syracuse in 2003, Anthony won the NCAA national championship, which marked the start of his illustrious basketball career. Anthony was selected by the Nuggets in the third round overall, and he quickly became a star in the NBA, averaging 21 points per game in his rookie campaign. LeBron James defeated Anthony in the race for rookie of the year in that year.

From 2003 to 2010, Anthony led the Nuggets to the postseason each year while he was a player in Denver. Over the course of those seven seasons, he averaged 24.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and was nominated for four All-Star games. Anthony’s 27.2 points per game helped Denver reach the Western Conference Finals in 2009, but they were defeated by the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers.

After Denver’s 2010–11 season ended with a first-round playoff loss to the Utah Jazz, there was apparently a breach between Anthony and the Nuggets. After apparently refusing to accept a contract extension, Anthony asked for a trade. Anthony was subsequently transferred by Denver to his hometown Knicks in a huge three-team, 13-player trade that also involved the Minnesota Timberwolves. Anthony was born in Brooklyn before moving to Baltimore when he was 8 years old.

The Knicks traded Eddy Curry, Anthony Randolph, a future first-round selection, two future second-round picks, Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Timofey Mozgov, a future first-round pick, a future second-round pick, and cash to the Nuggets and the Timberwolves, respectively. Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Renaldo Balkman, Shelden Williams, and Anthony Carter were acquired by New York from Denver, and Corey Brewer was obtained from Minnesota.

During his career, Carmelo Anthony played for six different NBA teams.

Anthony averaged 24.7 points per game and was named to seven All-Star teams while playing in New York. In the first three seasons of Anthony’s reign, the Knicks reached the postseason but only managed to claim one championship. Eventually, following disagreements with then-team president Phil Jackson, he requested a trade during the 2017 summer. The Oklahoma City Thunder received Anthony in exchange for Enes Kanter, Doug McDermott, and a 2018 second-round selection from the Knicks.

Anthony spent time with four different teams during the course of the following five years of his career. He was only with the Thunder for one season before being traded to the Houston Rockets. Anthony was transferred to the Chicago Bulls two years later, but after being released, he joined with the Portland Trail Blazers. Anthony signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers to play with LeBron James in 2021 after spending two years in Portland. The ninth player to 28,000 career points, he overtook Moses Malone for ninth place on the league’s all-time scoring chart.
